Pincherle, Marc

Pincherle, Marc, noted French musicologist; b. Constantine, Algeria, June 13, 1888; d. Paris, June 20, 1974. He studied musicology in Paris with Pirro, Laloy, and Rolland. He served in both world wars; was taken prisoner of war in June 1940 and was interned in Germany until March 1941. He taught at the Paris École Normale de Musique; was artistic director of the Société Pleyel (1927–55) and president of the Société Française de Musicologie (1948–56). As a musicologist, he devoted himself mainly to the study of 17^th- and 18^th-century French and Italian music.
