Rooley, Anthony , English lutenist and teacher; b. Leeds, June 10, 1944. He received training in guitar at the Royal Academy of Music in London (1965–68), but was self-taught as a lutenist. From 1969 to 1971 he taught at the Royal Academy of Music, and later gave courses in Japan, Italy, and Switzerland as well as in England. With James Tyler, he founded the Consort of Musicke in 1969, an ensemble devoted to the performance of Renaissance music. From 1972 he was its sole director, and led it on many tours of Europe, the Middle East, and North America. In later years, he also was active as a stage director of early music and was co-director of the early music recording label Musica Oscura. He publ. the vols. A New Varietie of Lute Lessons (1975), The Penguin Book of Early Music (1976), and Performance: Revealing the Orpheus Within (1990).
