Rosé, Arnold (Josef)
Rosé, Arnold (Josef) , distinguished Austrian violinist and pedagogue; b. Iaşi, Oct. 24, 1863; d. London, Aug. 25, 1946. He studied under Karl Heissler at the Vienna Cons., and made his professional debut at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Oct. 30, 1879. In 1881 he was appointed concertmaster of the Vienna Phil, and Opera orch., a post he held for 57 years. He also founded the Rosé quartet in 1882, which won a high reputation throughout Europe; the quartet made its American debut at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., on April 28, 1928. Rosé taught at the Vienna Academy of Music (1893–1924). In the face of the Nazi Anschluss, he fled in 1938 to London, where he made his last public appearance in 1945. In 1902 Rosé married Justine Mahler, a sister of Gustav Mahler.
