Schmidt, Andreas, German baritone; b. Düsseldorf, June 30, 1960. He studied with Ingeborg Reichelt in Düsseldorf and with Fischer-Dieskau in Berlin. In 1984 he made his operatic debut as Dr. Mala testa at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. After making his first appearance at London’s Co vent Garden as Valentin in 1986, he returned to Berlin to create the title role in Rihm’s Oedipus in 1987. In 1990 he created the role of Ryuji in Henze’s Das verratene Meer in Berlin and sang Olivier in Capriccio in Salzburg. He was engaged as Lysiart in Euryanthe at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 1993. On Nov. 18, 1996, he made his N.Y. recital debut. In 1997 he sang in the Brahms centenary concert at London’s Wigmore Hall. As a soloist with orchs. and as a lieder artist, he has sung throughout the world. Among his other operatic roles are Mozart’s Count, Don Giovanni, Papageno, and Guglielmo, Posa, Amfortas, Wolfram, and Méphistophélès.
