šulek, Stjepan

šulek, Stjepan, prominent Croatian violinist, conductor, teacher, and composer; b. Zagreb, Aug. 5, 1914; d. there, Jan. 16, 1986. He studied violin with Huml at the Zagreb Academy of Music; was largely self-taught in composition, although he succeeded in becoming a composer of considerable merit. He was active as a violinist; became best known as a conductor; conducted the Zagreb Radio Chamber Orch. on many tours of Europe; was prof, of composition at the Zagreb Academy of Music (from 1945). His compositions reveal a strong individual profile.
