28. The Little Rock Nine were spat on
A group of African American students are the center of this extraordinary moment in history. Known as The Little Rock Nine, these were some of the first black students to attend the local white high school. In 1957, just 3 years after the laws abolishing segregation passed, most of the nation was still fighting to keep the blacks and white separate. Due to the mass unrest that still existed, soldiers from the Arkansas National Guard were commanded by the Governor to block the students from entering and one of them spat in the face of a female student.
