This extraordinary moment in history would not go over well if it happened today. After the Cold War was over, Chairman Mao and Kissinger, Nixon’s security adviser, had a phone meeting to discuss new and more beneficial trade agreements for the two global powerhouses. During their conversation, Mao jokingly offered to gift 10 million of their women to America. As both men chuckled, Kissinger said that he’d have to think it over. Widely regarded as a joke back then, this would never get past activists today.
