4. The German plot to use Mexico to defeat the United States

This photo is from an extraordinary moment in history that most of us never learned about. Few of us know that a telegram was sent from Germany to the Ambassador to Mexico. It wasn’t just any telegram. It included a proposal for an alliance between the two countries in an attempt to defeat the United States. According to the telegram and Arthur Zimmerman, the man who sent it, Mexico would get rights to the land known as Texas, Arizona and New Mexico in return.
