24. The Great Molasses Flood
This unbelievable photo from history shows one of the greatest disasters of the early 1900s. Affectionately called the Boston Molassacre by locals, this historic even took place on January 15, 1919. During that time the Purity Distilling Company had a storage tank filled with molasses waiting to be shipped. The tank unexpectedly and flooded the streets of Boston with nearly 2 and half million gallons of molasses. According to reports the molasses was not as slow as one may think, it spread thru the streets at nearly 35mph. The accident killed 21 people and injured another 150. The joke about the smell of molasses in the Boston summer air lasted for several years.
