The inventor of basketball can be seen holding a ball and a basket in this unbelievable photo from history. In 1891, James Naismith invented the game of basketball. Back then it was literally just getting the ball into the basket using a specific set of rules. Naismith wrote the original rule book and was responsible for starting the basketball program at the University of Kansas. He would live to see different versions of the sport he created eventually become nationally recognized including in the Olympics in 1904 and with the creation of the NIT and the NCAA Tournaments in the late 1930s.
