DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM

EMU's Distance Education program offers students three convenient distance learning options. First, EMU's online courses allow students to attend class when it's convenient for their busy schedule—early in the morning, during the weekend, or even at 2 a.m. Whether students live just 5 or 500 miles from EMU's campus, they are able to learn conveniently, using a computer from their home, office, hotel room, military base, or "virtually" any other location in the world. Second, Independent Learning courses allow students to enroll anytime, learn at their own pace, avoid commuting and parking inconveniences, satisfy general education requirements, and submit course work via Internet, fax, or U.S. mail. The third option is Interactive Television courses, which allow students to enroll in a single course that may be offered at multiple locations.

DELIVERY MEDIA

Courses are delivered via World Wide Web, videotapes and DVDs, print, and ITV. Students may meet in person or interact via e-mail, World Wide Web, mail, telephone, fax, or interactive television.

PROGRAMS OF STUDY

EMU-Online offers the Master of Science in engineering management; Master of Science in quality; Bachelor of Science in human nutrition through the Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CPD); Master of Science in human nutrition (CPD); Bachelor of Science in technology management (degree-completion program); Master of Arts in educational media and technology; graduate certificate in legal administration; and graduate certificate in educational media and technology.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Prior Learning and Portfolio Development is offered to students seeking credit for prior learning through portfolio assessment. A free workshop helps students identify competencies and document experience to create a portfolio to present for assessment by faculty members in appropriate departments.

STUDENT SERVICES

Distance learners can complete their online education entirely via the Internet. Registration, book buying, discussions, homework assignments, and exams are all available at the click of a computer mouse.

CREDIT OPTIONS

Students may transfer credits from another institution or may earn credits through examinations, portfolio assessment, military training, or business training.

More than 100 faculty members from EMU's academic departments currently teach online, Independent Learning, and Interactive Television courses at EMU.

Eastern Michigan University (EMU) is a public, comprehensive, metropolitan university that offers programs in the arts, sciences, and professions. Founded in 1849, the University comprises more than 24,000 students, who are served by 680 full-time faculty members as well as 1,200 staff members—on campus, off campus, and electronically. EMU offers undergraduate, graduate, specialist, doctoral, and certificate programs in its Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Health and Human Services, and Technology.

Eastern Michigan University continues to be the largest producer of educational personnel in the United States, including the largest producer of special education personnel, mathematics teachers, and science teachers, and is among the top ten producers of educational administrators. The University is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Eastern Michigan University's Continuing Education Office offers programs and courses online, at off-campus locations throughout the state, on weekends, in the evenings during the week, and in accelerated formats.

TUITION AND FEES

Out-of-state and international students can take EMU-Online courses at in-state tuition rates. In 2003–04, per-credit-hour rates for Michigan and Ohio residents were $153.15 for all levels (100–400) of undergraduate courses, $270.25 for lower-level (500–600) graduate courses, and $311.50 for upper-level (700–999) graduate courses.

Rates per credit hour for nonresidents in 2003–04 were $467.10 for all levels of undergraduate courses, $548.10 for lower-level graduate courses, and $618 for upper-level graduate courses.

A registration fee of $40 per semester and a general fee of $21 per credit hour are also assessed. Other fees include $50 for late registration, $10 per credit hour for technology, $30 for installment payment (for fall/winter only), $25 per month for late payments, and $20 for returned checks and declined charge cards. Program support fees also apply and range from $12.50 to $52.50 per credit hour. In addition to tuition and other applicable fees, online students are assessed an additional $40-per-credit-hour program fee. APPLYING

Undergraduate admission requirements include a completed application; a $30 application fee; transcripts from all high schools, colleges, or universities previously attended; and ACT or SAT I scores for persons with fewer than 12 college credits who are under 21 (no ACT or SAT I test scores are required for individuals over the age of 21). Individuals with 12 or more transferable credits apply as transfer students and usually do not need to send high school transcripts.

Graduate admission requirements include a completed application, a $35 application fee, and all transcripts from any colleges or universities the student has attended. In addition, each graduate program has its own requirements, which may include any or all of the following: proof of a GRE or GMAT score, a personal statement, one or more letters of recommendation, and a teaching certificate, for students planning to study education.
