Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania (LHUP) encourages academic excellence. The University's educational programs are designed to develop the intellectual skills and talents of all students. Distance Learning Program

Lock Haven University (LHUP) provides students with the opportunity to complete a full degree program (associate, bachelor's, or master's) or to complete individual courses either at a local education center or in the convenience of their homes.

Delivery Media

Lock Haven University offers distance learning programs via videoconferencing-based technologies or Web-based technologies to create a fully online experience. The videoconferencing sites are limited to sites contracting with the University. Web-based technologies include a full-featured course-management system, Web-casting of lectures, resource materials, threaded discussions, journaling, real-time chat discussions, document sharing, and other instructional methods that create active and engaged learning communities.

Programs of Study

LHUP offers associate degrees in criminal justice (online) and surgical technology (online) and a bachelor's degree in general studies (online). Students can complete some of their LHUP General Education requirements through the distance learning program as a nonmatriculating student. Four master's degree programs are also available. These include the Master of Education in Alternative Education program (on-line), Master of Education in Teaching and Learning program (online), Master of Liberal Arts (online), and Master of Health Science in Physician Assistant Studies program (distributed learning).

Noncredit certificates are available in business, construction technology (including International Code Council preparation courses for residential and commercial inspection), health care, Internet design and technical programs, networking and CompTIA certification prep, Microsoft certification prep, paralegal studies and legal secretary studies, and video game design and development. K–12 teachers can also take continuing education classes and receive Act 48 credit.

Special Programs

Lock Haven University encourages students to consider studying abroad. LHUP has a large and diverse international program, providing many opportunities for its students to study abroad for periods ranging from several weeks in a semester to a year or more. The University has direct exchange programs with institutions in Australia, China, Costa Rica, Croatia, England, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Scotland, Spain, and Ukraine. The University offers interested and qualified students an opportunity to participate in various internship programs that provide field experiences to supplement classroom learning.

Student Services

The course management system organizes information, services, and resources relevant to distance learners. Forms are available online to apply for admissions and/or register for courses. The Stevenson Library caters to online students, providing a catalog of resources and access to databases and full-text journals online.

Credit Options

The various subject examinations offered through the College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) program are approved and credit is awarded based on a test score of 3 or higher. With the exception of only one General Examination (English Composition) and four subject tests (Business Law, Educational Psychology, College Composition, and Freshman English) offered through the College Board's College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), degree credit may be earned by candidates who achieve a scaled score equivalent to the 50th percentile or higher using current national norms for each test. There is no limit to the number of courses for which CLEP or AP may award credit. A maximum of 6 graduate semester hours may be transferred and applied toward most graduate degrees.

Faculty

Of the 259 faculty members, 91 percent are full-time. Faculty members are noted for their diverse expertise, their interest in interdisciplinary study and their dedication to working with adult students. In addition to teaching, faculty members advise students, formulate program policy, and supervise independent study and capstone projects.

Admission

Admission requirements vary by program. Generally, undergraduates should have completed college-preparatory course work in high school, have a satisfactory command of the English language, and should have taken either the SAT or the ACT. In general, graduate students must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition and fees are set by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education once a year.

For the 2005–06 academic year, undergraduate tuition was $204 per credit for Pennsylvania residents and $208 per credit for nonresidents; the distance education fee was 10 percent of the tuition. Graduate in-state tuition was $376 per credit, and out-of-state students paid $384 per credit. For graduate and undergraduate students, the tuition technology fee was $31 for residents and $47 for nonresidents.

Financial Aid

Financial aid to meet the costs of attending LHUP is available from a variety of programs, including grants, loans, and scholarships. The majority of these programs provide funds based on computed financial need, but some non-need-based programs are also available. To apply for financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Pennsylvania residents should complete this form as provided by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency and any supplemental forms required for the Pennsylvania State Grant. Of all full-time matriculated undergraduates who enrolled in 2003, 77 percent of undergraduates had their financial need fully met.

Applying

Application procedures vary by program, and students should contact the distance education office for specific information. Applicants are required to submit the completed application, a $25 application fee, all high school transcripts, and official SAT or ACT scores. In addition, graduate programs require official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate work; students applying to the Master of Education programs must also submit three letters of recommendation and a writing sample. International students must also submit TOEFL scores. All applications are processed on a rolling basis.
