Independent, university, coed. Awards bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and first professional degrees and post-master's certificates. Founded 1851. Setting: 250-acre suburban campus with easy access to Chicago. Endowment: $3.7 billion. Total enrollment: 16,663. Faculty: 1,135 (933 full-time, 202 part-time). Student-undergrad faculty ratio is 7:1. 15,637 applied, 30% were admitted. 82% from top 10% of their high school class, 96% from top quarter, 100% from top half. 152 National Merit Scholars, 158 valedictorians. Full-time: 7,846 students, 53% women, 47% men. Part-time: 185 students, 55% women, 45% men.
