Syracuse University was founded in 1870. It is accredited by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. It first offered distance learning courses in 1977. In fall 2003, there were 166 students enrolled in distance learning courses. Institutionally administered financial aid is available to distance learners.

Founded in 1977, the Independent Study MBA (iMBA) Program at Syracuse University is the nation's longest-running AACSB International–accredited distance learning MBA program. The 1-week residency at the beginning of each trimester is the hallmark of this program. During the week on campus, or at one of the international sites, students are taught by the same faculty members who have taught in the full-time and part-time evening MBA program at Syracuse. The iMBA curriculum is identical to the full-time MBA program. The week is composed of intensive classes and informal time with faculty members and other students. The beginning of each course is the class time during the residency week. For new students the first day consists of an orientation program and the registration process, followed by a reception with faculty members and returning students. For continuing students the first day consists of exams for the classes taken in the last trimester, followed by the reception. Then all students take intensive classes in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management building over the next 5 days. Classes are small, typically 10–30 students per course. At the conclusion of the residency week, students leave Syracuse with an understanding of the requirements for completion of their courses. They communicate extensively between residencies with their professors and classmates via e-mail. The course ends with the exam, if required, at the following residency. Following the model, students typically take 2 courses each trimester per year, completing 18 credits toward the MBAeach year. The MBAcan be completed in as little as 2 years or as many as 7; 3 years is the average. Admission is conducted on a rolling basis year-round. New students who are accepted may begin at any of the residencies, which occur annually in January, May, and August. Basic requirements for admission consideration are a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution, TOEFL score for international applicants, and the completed application, including 1 recommendation letter.
