Description:
State-supported, university, coed. Awards bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and first professional degrees and post-master's certificates. Founded 1791. Setting: 425-acre suburban campus. Endowment: $240.5 million. Research spending 2003-04: $101.8 million. Educational spending 2003-04: $9270 per student. Total enrollment: 10,940. Faculty: 691 (550 full-time, 141 part-time). Student-undergrad faculty ratio is 15:1. 11,373 applied, 76% were admitted. 23% from top 10% of their high school class, 57% from top quarter, 93% from top half. 27 valedictorians. Collegiate Environment:
Orientation program. Drama-theater group, choral group, student-run newspaper, radio station. Most popular organizations: Volunteers in Action, Outing Club, club sports. Major annual events: Springfest, Homecoming. Campus security: 24-hour emergency response devices and patrols, late night transport-escort service, controlled dormitory access. 3,977 college housing spaces available; 3,900 were occupied in 2003-04. Community Environment:
Burlington is Vermont's largest city and, while the University is a significant resource, the city has many cultural, recreational, and social offerings. Burlington is a tourist and business center with a rich history and significant business development.
