Sheriffmuir, battle of
Sheriffmuir, battle of, 1715. Leading the Jacobite rising, Mar rallied his forces at Perth and commanded 9,000 men: Argyll, with much smaller numbers, took up position at Stirling. On 13 November the armies did battle at Sheriffmuir, near Dunblane. In a confused encounter, each army's right wing carried the day, but Argyll retired to Stirling in good order. Mar was unable to follow up his advantage, abandoned Perth, retreated to Aberdeen, and, at length, took ship for France.
