Match Point
Match Point ★★★½ 2005 (R)
Brilliantly Allenesque—full of layers and complexities—but with a new setting, new scenery, and some new players too. Allen ventures far from his usual cinematic haunts, all the way to London, where gorgeous, tortured social-climbers find themselves torn apart by lust, morality, and class divisions. Chris Wilton (Rhys-Meyers), a former tennis pro of modest means, is introduced to high society through the wealthy family of his pal Tom Hewett (Goode). He soon hooks up with Tom's sister Chloe (Mortimer), but Chris' tryst with Tom's smoldering American girlfriend (Johannson) sets the scene for good old-fashioned murder. Light on the laughs, but Allen hasn't been this thrilling in years. 124m/C DVD . Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Emily Mortimer, Matthew Goode, Brian Cox, Penelope Wilton, Ewen Bremner, James Nesbitt, Rupert Penry-Jones, Margaret Tyzack; D: Woody Allen; W: Woody Allen; C: Remi Adefarasin.
