The sb. survives in gen. literary use in the comp. scatheless (XII; — ON. skaðlauss), the vb. in scathing (-ING2) (poet.) blasting, searing XVIII; fig. as of invective XIX; unscathed (-ED1) uninjured XIV (orig. Sc.).
