To provide financial assistance to upper-division and graduate student members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) who are majoring in fields that will prepare them for a career in industrial minerals.
Title of Award: Gerald V. Henderson Industrial Minerals Memorial Scholarship Area, Field, or Subject: Economics; Engineering, Mining and Mineral; Geology; Metallurgy Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Four Year College, Graduate Number Awarded: 1 or more each year. Funds Available: A total of $2,000 is awarded each year. Duration: 1 year.
Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must 1) be majoring in a field related to the minerals industry (e.g., geology, minerals engineering, mining engineering, or mineral economics) at a 4-year college or university, 2) have completed at least their sophomore year in college, 3) be a U.S. citizen, and 4) be a student member of the society. They must be of good character, be of sound health, have demonstrated scholastic aptitude (GPA of 3.0 or higher), and be able to demonstrate financial need. Candidates for these scholarships may be proposed by any of the following: mining and minerals companies; local sections of the society; state mining institutes; high school principals; industrial minerals associations; manufacturers of mining and processing equipment; minerals research organizations; or geology and mining engineering departments at colleges or universities. An interview may be required. Deadline for Receipt: October of each year.

Title of Award: Mineral and Metallurgical Processing Division Scholarship Area, Field, or Subject: Engineering, Mining and Mineral; Metallurgy Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Four Year College Number Awarded: Up to 6 each year. Funds Available: The first-place recipient is given $2,000 (plus travel to the society's annual meeting). The other winners each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Duration: 1 year.
Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to student members of the society who have completed their sophomore year in college; are enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree program that has required course work in minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, and/or metallurgical engineering; are U.S. citizens; and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Only 1 candidate from each eligible department may be nominated each academic year. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in preparing for a career in mineral processing or metallurgical engineering in the mining industry. Deadline for Receipt: October of each year.

To provide financial assistance for college to women who are interested in careers in jewelry.
Title of Award: Women's Jewelry Association Scholarship Area, Field, or Subject: Business administration; Crafts; Finance; Marketing and distribution; Metallurgy Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Undergraduate Number Awarded: Varies each year. Recently, 12 of these scholarships were awarded: 1 at $5,000, 2 at $3,000, 1 at $2,500, 1 at $1,500 and 7 at $1,000. Funds Available: Stipends range from $500 to $5,000 per year. Duration: 1 year.
Eligibility Requirements: Women who are enrolled in a jewelry-related curriculum at an institution of higher learning located anywhere in the United States are eligible to apply. Eligible fields of study range from design to gemological analysis and include metalsmithing, finance, business, and marketing. Applicants must submit 2 letters of recommendation, a short essay explaining why they wish to prepare for a career in jewelry/toolmaking and their aspirations for the future, 3 slides showing examples of their work, and a list of 3 courses related to jewelry that have been most important to them. Financial need is considered in the selection process. Deadline for Receipt: April of each year. Additional Information: This program includes the June Herman Scholarship of $5,000, awarded for the first time in 2001.
