TOP TEN TIPS FOR TRAVELERS

This listing is for U.S. citizens traveling on tourism/business and does not apply to persons planning to emigrate to foreign countries. Persons traveling on official business for the U.S. Government should obtain visa information from the agency sponsoring their travel. For purposes of this publication, a visa is an endorsement or stamp placed by officials of a foreign country on a U.S. passport that allows the bearer to visit that foreign country. Note: Wherever you see the words “photo(s) required” in this publication, it generally means that you will need to submit passport-size (2”x2”) photographs.

IMPORTANT: THIS LISTING IS PREPARED FROM INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM FOREIGN EMBASSIES PRIOR TO DECEMBER 2005. THIS INFORMATION IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE. CHECK ENTRY REQUIREMENTS WITH THE CONSULAR OFFICIALS OF THE COUNTRIES TO BE VISITED WELL IN ADVANCE.

PASSPORTS: U.S. citizens who travel to a country where a valid U.S. passport is not required will need documentary evidence of their U.S. citizenship and identity. Proof of U.S. citizenship includes an expired U.S. passport or an original birth certificate. A certified copy of the birth certificate is also acceptable, but it must have the registrar’s signature and a raised, impressed, embossed, or multicolored seal. If you were born abroad, a Certificate of Naturalization, Certificate of Citizenship, or Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States will suffice. To prove identity, a valid driver’s license or government identification card are acceptable provided they identify you by physical description or photograph. However, for travel overseas and to facilitate reentry into the U.S., a valid U.S. passport is the best documentation available and unquestionably proves your U.S. citizenship. Before you send your passport through the mail to apply for a visa, sign it in ink, and write in pencil your current address and daytime telephone number in the space provided. This will help the U.S. Postal Service return it to you should it become separated from the envelope during processing.

Some countries require that your U.S. passport be valid at least 6 months or longer beyond the dates of your trip. If your passport expires before the required validity, you will have to apply for a new one. Please check with the Embassy or nearest Consulate of the country that you plan to visit for their requirements. Some Middle Eastern or African countries will not issue visas or allow entry if your passport indicates travel to Israel. On effective dates below, all travelers to or from the Americas, the Caribbean and Bermuda will be required to have a passport or other document that establishes the bearer’s identity and nationality to enter or re-enter the United States.

Effective January 23, 2007 , all U.S. citizens traveling by air to and from Bermuda and the Caribbean are required to have a valid passport to enter the United States.

As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and Bermuda/Caribbean by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries. American citizen travelers are encouraged to apply for a U.S. passport, or the passport card when it becomes available, well in advance of anticipated travel. American citizens can visit travel.state.gov or call 1-877-4USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778) for information on applying for a passport.

VISAS: If a visa is required, obtain it from the appropriate foreign consular representative before proceeding abroad. Allow sufficient time for processing your visa application, especially if you are applying by mail. Most foreign consular representatives are located in principal cities, and in many instances, a traveler may be required to obtain visas from the consular office in the area of his/her residence. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE TRAVELER TO OBTAIN VISAS, WHERE REQUIRED, FROM THE APPROPRIATE EMBASSY OR NEAREST CONSULATE OF THE COUNTRY YOU ARE PLANNING TO VISIT. As soon as you receive your visa, check it to make sure no mistakes were made. Processing and visa fees vary, and most fees may not be refundable. For specific details, consult the Embassy or Consulate of the country you plan to visit.

IMMUNIZATIONS: Under the International Health Regulations adopted by the World Health Organization, a country may require International Certificates of Vaccination against yellow fever, especially if you are traveling from an area of the world that is infected with yellow fever. Prophylactic medication for malaria and certain other preventive measures are advisable for travel to some countries. No immunizations are required to return to the United States. HIV/HIV TESTING: An increasing number of countries have established regulations regarding HIV testing, particularly for long-term visitors. Although many are listed here, check with the Embassy or Consulate of the country that you plan to visit to verify if this is a requirement for entry.

ADDITIONAL FEES: All international flights are subject to U.S. Immigration and U.S. Customs fees paid in advance as part of your ticket. In addition, many countries have departure fees that are sometimes collected at the time of ticket purchase or upon exiting the foreign country.

AFGHANISTAN —Passport and visa required. Visa requires one application form, one passport-sized photo attached to application form, a passports with minimum of six months validity, an invitation letter from employer or sponsor, and proof of sufficient funds. Visa fee processed in 2 weeks $50, three days $70, and 24 hrs $100; must be paid with money order or cashier’s check. ALBANIA —A passport is required. All travelers entering or exiting Albania must have six months or more validity on their passport. Customs officers strictly enforce this law. A traveler does not have to obtain a visa prior to entering Albania. An entry card will be issued at the point of entry that is valid for a stay of up to 30 days for a fee of ten Euros, or the equivalent in any easily convertible currency, including U.S. dollars. An extension of up to 60 days (90 days total) may be obtained by applying at the local police station. For stays exceeding 90 days, those interested must apply for a Residency Permit at the police station with jurisdiction over the city of residence. There is also a departure fee of ten Euros, or the equivalent in any easily convertible currency, including U.S. dollars. ALGERIA —Passport and visa required. Obtain visa prior to arrival. Visa applications must be typed. Handwritten visa applications will not be accepted. Visa required for stays up to 90 days. Provide 2 application forms, 2 photos, and a non-refundable $100 fee (money order or certified check). Tourist visas require an itinerary from an airline and a hotel reservation. Business visas require an invitation from the company being visited and a company letter stating the trip’s purpose. Work visas require an employment authorization hand delivered by the Algerian Ministry of Labor. Family guest visit visas require a notarized invitation letter from host in Algeria. ANGOLA —Passport, visa, and International Certificate of Vaccination required. Certificate must show inoculations against yellow fever. Failure to do so may result in involuntary vaccinations and/or fines. Tourist visas require 2 application forms, Passport with validity of six months remaining, 1 recent photo with name on back, letter stating purpose of travel, letter of invitation sent by the individual or institution to be contacted in Angola, photocopy of a roundtrip ticket or travel itinerary, roof of sufficient funds ($100 per day – bank statement or letter from employer will suffice), and $110 fee (certified check or money order only). Visa valid for stays up to 90 days. HIV test required for all foreigners applying for work visas and resident permits. ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA —Passport with minimum validity of six months or proof of U.S. citizenship such as certified birth certificate along with picture ID required. Return/onward ticket, and proof of funds required for tourist stay of up to 6 months. Visa requires completed application, two black and white photos (2 ½” x 2), $30 visa fee (money order) required for single entry and $35 for multiple entry. ARGENTINA —Passport required. Visa not required for business/tourist stay of up to 90 days. ARMENIA —Passport and visa required. Visa for stay of up to 21 days, requires 1 application form, 1 photo, and $60 to $95 processing fee (fees vary according to processing time). For stays longer than 21 days, but not exceeding 90 days, an official invitation from a qualifying entity in Armenia is required ($35 to $65 fee). No fee for children under 18 years of age. ARUBA —Passport or proof of U.S. citizenship (original official birth or naturalization certificate and photo ID) required. Visa not required for tourist/business visit of up to 90 days. Proof of onward/return ticket or sufficient funds for stay may be required. Airport facility charge is $32, paid upon departure. Fee is included in tickets purchased in the U.S. HIV test required for intending immigrants. AUSTRALIA —Passport, Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or non-electronic label visa, proof of onward or return ticket, and sufficient funds are required. An ETA or non-electronic label visa is required for tourist or business stays of up to 3 months. An ETA is an electronically stored authority to travel to Australia and can be obtained online at www.ETA.immi.gov.au or through participating travel agencies or airlines. Minors not accompanied by a parent or traveling with only one parent need notarized written parental consent from the absent parent(s). HIV test required for permanent resident visa for applicants age 15 and older; tests taken in the U.S. are acceptable. AUSTRIA —Passport required. Visa not required for tourist stay of up to 90 days. (The 90-day period begins when entering Schengen countries). For stay of up to six months visa requires 1 completed application form, a valid passport, 1 recent photo, onward/return ticket proof of sufficient funds and a notarized letter of invitation. Proof of travel/health/accident insurance also required. Visa with maximum validity of six months will be issued free of charge for U.S. citizens only. AZERBAIJAN —Passport and visa required. Visa requires original passport, 1 application form, 2 photos, confirmation from hotel or letter of invitation, and appropriate fee ($20 to $250, according to type and length of visa payable by money order or company check only). Transit and short stay single entry visas (7days) can be obtained at the visa section of the consular department in the airport upon arrival. All travelers staying more than 30 days must register their passports with the local passport-registration authorities. BAHAMAS —Proof of U.S. citizenship, i.e., a passport (if you are using an expired passport it cannot be expired more than 5 years) or original or certified copy of a birth certificate with a photo ID, and onward/return ticket required for stay of up to 8 months. Proof of sufficient funds required. Passport and residence/work permit needed for residence and business. Permit required for firearms and to import pets. Departure tax of $15 must be paid at airport. BAHRAIN —Passport and visa required. Single-entry visa, valid for two weeks required a valid passport, 1 application and $30 fee (money order only). Multi-entry tourist visa requires that the applicant submit a letter (for visa) or company letter on company letterhead (for business visa) guaranteeing full responsibility for all expenses, and stating a reason for visit and duration, 1 application form, and $50 fee. Transit visa available upon arrival at the airport is valid from three days to two weeks and require onward/return ticket. All application forms for minors must include letter of consent from both parents and a photocopy of their passports. A single parent needs a legal document showing proof of legal guardian status. BANGLADESH —Passport, visa, and onward/return ticket required. Tourist/business visa requires 2 application forms, 3 photos (37mm x 37mm), and $100 fee (bank draft or money order). Tourist visa should also attach travel itinerary. Business visa requires letter of justification/financial guarantee from the employer. Student visa requires financial guarantee certificate and letter from educational institution. BARBADOS —Passport and proof of sufficient funds required. Passport must be valid beyond the duration of this visit to Barbados. Cruise passengers planning to disembark in Barbados must have a valid passport. [Tourist] visa not required for stays up to six months. Departure tax of $12.50 ($25 BDS) paid at the airport. Visa requires 2 completed visa application forms, 2 passport sized photos accompanied by a valid passport. A $25 fee is required for single entry and $30 for multiple entry (cash or money order only). Single-/Multiple-entry visas valid for 3 months. Business visa requires work permit and letter from host or company in Barbados. BELARUS —Passport and visa required. Business visa requires 1 application form, 1 photo, and letter of invitation from a Belarusian organization, company or agency. Visitor visa requires 1 application form, 1 photo, and original invitation from a Belarus citizen. Tourist visa (for stay of up to 30 days) requires 1 application form, 1 photo, and confirmation or voucher from travel agency in Belarus. Transit visa is required when traveling through Belarus. The visa processing fee for single-entry visas is $100 for 5 working days, and $180 for next day processing. The visa processing fee for single-entry tourist visa is $50 for 5 business days, and $90 for the next business day. Fees must be paid by money order or cashier’s check only. BELGIUM —Passport required. Visa not required for business/tourist stay of up to 90 days. (The 90-day period begins when entering Schengen countries). Onward/return ticket and proof of sufficient funds required. Visa and temporary residence permit required for longer stays, study, or work. Visa requires valid passport, 1 application, letter of invitation, and proof of hotel reservation. Proof of travel/accident insurance required. Biometric visas are available at the Embassy of Belgium in Washington, D.C. People who apply for a visa at this location will receive a visa, which contains biometrics (along with your application, a picture and your fingerprints will be taken). Visa application fee is 45.50. You may not apply for a visa by mail at the Washington, DC embassy. BELIZE —Passport, return/onward ticket and sufficient funds (at least $60 per night) required. Visa not required for stay of up to 30 days. If visit exceeds 1 month, obtain a stay permit from the Immigration Authorities in Belize. Single-entry visa, valid up to 90 days, requires $50 (include $10 for shipping payable by money order or bank draft). Visa requires 1 application form and 1 passport sized photo. HIV test required for those seeking residency; U.S. test accepted if within 3 months of visit. BENIN —Passport with minimum validity of six months and visa required. Visa for stay of up to 36 months, requires $100 fee (certified check or money order only), 1 application form, 1 passport size photo, proof of yellow fever vaccination, proof of return/onward transportation, guarantee from employer, travel agency, or letter of guarantee from bank. BHUTAN —Passport and visa required. Independent travel is not permitted in Bhutan. Visitors are required to book travel through a registered tour operator in Bhutan. This may be done directly or through a travel agent abroad. Entry is available only via India, Bangladesh, Burma, Nepal, and Thailand. The border with China is closed. The minimum daily tariff is set by the Bhutanese Department of Tourism and cannot be negotiated. The rate includes all accommodations, all meals, transportation, services of licensed guides and porters, and cultural programs where and when available. BOLIVIA —Valid passport required for entry and departure. Visa not required for tourist stay of up to 30 days (can be extended up to 90 days upon application to the Bolivian immigration authorities). Visitors for other purposes must obtain a visa in advance. Tourist cards issued upon arrival in Bolivia. A “Defined Purpose Visa” for adoptions, business, or other travel requires 1 application form, 1 photo, and $85 fee. Business travelers must include a company letter explaining purpose of trip. BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA —Passport required. Visa not required for tourist stays of up to 3 months. All persons entering Bosnia and Herzegovina through an international airport are now required to submit a landing card. Landing cards are provided by airlines during the flight or upon arrival. BOTSWANA —Passport, onward/return ticket, and proof of sufficient funds required. Visa not required for stays up to 90 days. For longer stays visa requires 2 application forms, valid passport (minimum of six months validity), two passports sized photos, and $107 fee (money order). BRAZIL —Passport with minimum validity of six months and visa required. Tourist visas are issued within two business days if applicant submits application in person. Visas are valid for multiple entries within 5 years for a period to be determined by the consular officer, for stays of up to 90 days renewable for the same length of stay by the Brazilian Federal Police. First entry into Brazil must be within 90 days of visa issuance. Visa requires 1 application form, 1 passport size photo, and proof of onward/return transportation. Travelers who have recently visited certain countries, including most other Latin American countries (check with the Brazilian Embassy) may be required to present an inoculation card indicating they had a yellow fever immunization. Children ages 3 months to 6 years require an international polio vaccination certificate. Minors under the age of 18, if not traveling with both parents, must provide notarized letter of consent signed by the non-accompanying parent(s) or guardian authorizing the consulate to issue a visa. There is a processing fee of $100 for tourists. Additional $10 fee for applications sent by mail, or by anyone other than applicant. Provide SASE for return of passport by mail. BRUNEI DARUSSALAM —Passport with minimum validity of six months and onward/return ticket required. Visa not required for tourist/business stay of up to 90 days. HIV test required for work permits; tests taken in the U.S. are not accepted. BULGARIA —Passport required. Visa not required for tourist stays of up to 90 days. American citizen tourists may remain in Bulgaria for up to 90 days during any six-month period from the date of the first entry. All visitors must be able to, upon request, show proof of valid medical insurance covering the duration of their stay. For stays longer than 90 days or for those traveling on diplomatic or official passports, a visa is required and must be obtained in advance. Visa is free of charge for those traveling on diplomatic or official passports and U.S. citizens with regular passports must pay a $25 processing fee. HIV test required for all intending immigrants and may be required for foreigners staying longer than 1 month for purposes of study or work; U.S. test is accepted. BURKINA FASO —Passport and visa required. Multiple entry visas, valid up to 3 months ($75 fee) or 6 months ($100 fee), require appropriate fee, 2 application forms, and 2 photos. Proof of compulsory yellow fever immunization needed and cholera vaccination recommended. Those staying for more than eight days, are required to register with local police and obtain a permit to stay (permesso di soggiorno). Tourists may request an application for the permit from one of 14,000 national post offices (Poste Italiane). The kit must then be returned to one of 5,332 designated Post Office acceptance locations. Failure to obtain the permit of stay within eight days is punishable by fine. Some countries require that your U.S. passport be valid at least six months or longer beyond the dates of your trip. Check with the Embassy or Consulate of the country you plan to visit for their requirements.

CONSULAR INFORMATION PROGRAM

The State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs provides assistance and information to U.S. citizens traveling abroad. Consular Affairs issues Consular Information Sheets, Travel Warnings, Public Announcements, and other travel publications. The following gives a brief description of some of the information currently available through the Consular Information Program:

Consular Information Sheets, Travel Warnings, and Public Announcements

Consular Information Sheets are issued for every country in the world. They include such information as the location of the U.S. embassy or consulate in the subject country, health conditions, political disturbances, unusual currency and entry regulations, crime and security information, and drug penalties.

The State Department also issues Travel Warnings and Public Announcements. Travel Warnings are issued when the State Department decides to recommend that Americans avoid travel to a certain country. Countries where avoidance of travel is recommended will have Travel Warnings as well as Consular Information Sheets. Public Announcements are issued as a means to disseminate information quickly about terrorist threats and other relatively short-term and/or transnational conditions posing significant risks to the security of American travelers.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR TRAVELERS

• Make sure you have a signed, valid passport and visa, if required. Also, before you go, fill in the emergency information page of your passport!
• Read the Consular Information Sheets (and Public Announcements or Travel Warnings, if applicable) for the countries you plan to visit.
• Leave copies of your itinerary, passport data page and visas with family or friends at home, so that you can be contacted in case of an emergency.
• Make sure you have insurance, which will cover your emergency medical needs, while you are overseas.
• Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs of the countries to which you are traveling. Remember, while in a foreign country, you are subject to its laws!
• Do not leave your luggage unattended in public areas and never accept packages from strangers.
• While abroad, avoid using illicit drugs or drinking excessive amounts of alcoholic beverages, and associating with people who do.
• Do not become a target for thieves by wearing conspicuous clothing and expensive jewelry and do not carry excessive amounts of cash or unnecessary credit cards.
• Deal only with authorized agents when you exchange money or purchase art or antiques in order to avoid violating local laws.
• When overseas, avoid demonstrations and other situations that may become unruly or where anti-American sentiments may be expressed.
