Canning, Charles John, Earl (1812–62) British imperial administrator. Son of George Canning, he served in government before becoming Governor General of India (1856–58). He repressed the Indian Mutiny and followed a policy of conciliation earning him the nickname ‘Clemency Canning’. With the transfer of the government of India to the British Crown, Canning became the first Viceroy of India (1858–62).
