Lakeland, resort city (1990 pop. 70,576), Polk co., central Fla., in the highland region; inc. 1885. It is an important processing and shipping center for a citrus-fruit and phosphate-mining region and is a retail trade center that serves a large area. The Florida Citrus Commission, other state citrus organizations, and the Florida Phosphate Council have their headquarters in Lakeland, which is a popular winter resort and recreation center. Points of interest include a major sports and convention complex and the Frank Lloyd Wright buildings at Florida Southern College. Lakeland is also the seat of Southeastern College of the Assemblies of God. The Orange Cup regatta is held yearly on nearby Lake Hollingsworth.
