Duchess of Leuchtenburg. Name variations: Princess Amalie Auguste of Bavaria; Augusta of Bavaria; Auguste, princess of Bavaria. Born on June 21, 1788; died on May 13, 1851; daughter of Maximilian I Joseph, king of Bavaria (r. 1805–1825), and Wilhelmine of Darmstadt (1765–1796); married Eugène de Beauharnais, duke of Leuchtenburg, on January 4, 1806; children: August or Auguste (1810–1835); Maximilian (1817–1852), duke of Leuchtenburg; Josephine Beauharnais (1807–1876); Eugénie Hortense (1808–1847); Amelia of Leuchtenburg (1812–1873); Theodelinde (1814–1857).
After Amalie Auguste married Eugène de Beauharnais in 1806, her French husband purchased title and lands from her father Maximilian I Joseph, king of Bavaria. In 1817, he also purchased the principality of Eichstätt. As duke and duchess, the couple were now the founders of the landgraviate of Leuchtenburg in Bavaria, and their children formed connections with several royal families. Their son August of Leuchtenburg married Queen Maria II da Gloria of Portugal but he died two months later. Maximilian married Maria Nikolaevna (1819–1876), eldest daughter of Nicholas I, tsar of Russia. Eldest daughter Josèphine Beauharnais married Oscar I, king of Sweden, in 1823. The second daughter Eugénie Hortense married Frederick-William, a prince of Hohenzollern-Hechingen. Their daughter Amelia of Leuchtenburg married Pedro I, emperor of Brazil in 1829, and the fourth daughter Theodelinde married Count William of Württemberg.
