Begga of Egremont (fl. 7th c.)

Norwegian saint. Name variations: Beggha. Born in Ireland in the 7th century.

Daughter of a king of Ireland, Begga of Egremont was betrothed to the king of Norway, but she was determined to remain a virgin and fled on the eve of her wedding. She received the veil from St. Aidan and founded a convent at Copeland. For many centuries, Begga was venerated in northwest England as well as in Norway. Her feast day is October 31.
