Columba of Cordova (d. 853)

Saint. Executed in 853 in Cordova, Spain.

At the time of Columba's birth, Christians and Muslims had been locked in conflict for over 500 years. During one persecution of Catholics by the Muslims, Columba, a nun at Cordova, purposefully left her convent to declare her faith before the cadi's tribunal (Muslim magistrates). For this, she was beheaded in 853. Her feast day is celebrated on September 17.
