Genth, Lillian (1876–1953)
American figure painter who was noted for studies of nudes in Arcadian settings. Born Lillian Mathilde Genth in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1876; died in1953; daughter of Samuel Genth and Matilda Caroline (Rebsher) Genth; educated privately and in Philadelphia public schools; studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women with Elliott Daingerfield, and with James McNeill Whistler in Paris; never married.
A popular artist at the dawn of the 20th century, Lillian Genth was known for her portraits and paintings of the female nude against a landscape background. Her work can be found in the National Gallery, Washington, D.C.; the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh; the National Arts Club, New York City; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; the Brooklyn Museum; and in private collections.
