Ghisi, Diana (c. 1530–1590)

Italian sculptor and engraver. Born around 1530 into a Mantuan family of engravers; died in 1590; daughter of Giorgio Battista Ghisi, called Mantuano (a painter, sculptor, architect, and engraver); sister and pupil of Giorgio Ghisi (b. 1524).

Diana Ghisi was born around 1530 into a Mantuan family of engravers; her father Giorgio Battista Ghisi, called Mantuano, was a painter, sculptor, architect, and engraver who flourished about the mid-16th century. Her brother and teacher was Giorgio Ghisi, also an eminent engraver born in 1524, whose works were esteemed by collectors. In contrast to another brother Adamo, Diana Ghisi was considered the best artist and executed some plates of great merit. They were all called Mantuano.
