Hack, Maria (1777–1844)
English author of children's books. Born Maria Barton on November 10, 1777, in Carlisle, Cumberland, England; died on January 4, 1844; daughter of Quakers; sister of Bernard Barton (a poet and friend of Charles Lamb); married Stephen Hack (a Chichester merchant), in 1800; children: several.
The daughter of Quakers, Maria Hack was born in Carlisle, England, in 1777. She married when she was 23 and had many children. Following her husband's death, Hack moved to Southampton where she joined the Church of England. Her then-popular books, which were morally instructional, included Winter Evenings (1818), Grecian Stories (1819), and English Stories (1820, 1825), the last of which ranged from Alfred's accession to the English throne to the time of the Tudors.
