British character actress. Born on June 17, 1918 (some sources cite 1920), in Hereford, England; died on October 13, 1996, in Slough, England.

A versatile British character actress who was equally adept at comedy and drama, Beryl Reid began her career as a music-hall performer, then graduated to stage and screen. She won wide acclaim in America for her Broadway portrayal of the caustic lesbian radio soap-opera star in The Killing of Sister George (1966), a role she reprised in the 1968 film. Reid died in 1996, having developed pneumonia after a knee operation.
