See index for CA sketch: Born December 28, 1922, in Orange City, IA; died of cancer, July 2, 2007, in Evanston, IL. Historian, educator, and author. Ver Steeg spent nearly his entire career at Northwestern University, where he taught U.S. history from 1950 until 1992. Deeply attached to the university and its campus, he was an instrumental member of the planning committee responsible for reclaiming adjacent land from Lake Michigan in the 1960s to expand the campus. He also dedicated himself to elevating the status of Northwestern from a regional college to a nationally respected research university. Ver Steeg wrote many articles and several books, including Robert Morris, Revolutionary Financier, for which he received the Albert J. Beveridge Award of the American Historical Association in 1952. Other writings include Southern Colonies in the Eighteenth Century, 1689-1783 (1975) and American Spirit: A History of the United States (1982). With historian Richard Hofstadter, Ver Steeg edited Great Issues in American History: From Settlement to Revolution, 1584-1776 (1969).
