Anna ★★★ 1987 (PG-13)

Age, envy, and the theatrical world receive their due in an uneven but engrossing drama about aging Czech film star Anna, making a sad living in New York doing commercials and trying for off-Broadway roles. She takes in Krystyna, a young Czech peasant girl who eventually rockets to model stardom. Modern, strongly acted “All About Eve” with a story partially based on a real Polish actress. Kirkland drew quite a bit of flak for shamelessly self-promoting for the Oscar. She still lost. 101m/C VHS, DVD . Sally Kirkland, Paulina Porizkova, Robert Fields, Stefan Schnabel, Larry Pine, Ruth Maleczech; D: Yurek Bogayevicz; W: Yurek Bogayevicz, Agnieszka Holland; C: Bobby Bukowski; M: Greg Hawkes. Golden Globes '88: Actress—Drama (Kirkland); Ind. Spirit '88: Actress (Kirkland); L.A. Film Critics '87: Actress (Kirkland).
