The Black Rose
The Black Rose ★★½ 1950
Technicolor action, set in the 13th century, as English Saxon Walter of Gurnie (Power) seeks to restore his fortunes by traveling in a caravan to the wilds of Cathay. Welles is the bizarre and brutal Tartan general Bayan, and pretty (and young) French actress Aubrey looks out of place as runaway concubine, Maryam, so the romance between her and Walter is sketchy at best. Based on the novel by Thomas B. Costain. 120m/C DVD . Tyrone Power, Orson Welles, Cecile Aubry, Jack Hawkins, Finlay Currie, Herbert Lom, Michael Rennie, Robert (Bobby) Blake; D: Henry Hathaway; W: Talbot Jennings; C: Jack Cardiff; M: Richard Addinsell.
