The Comedians
The Comedians ★★½ 1967
Disturbing and powerful drama of political intrigue set against the murderous dictatorship of “Papa Doc” Duvalier. Burton plays the cynical owner of a resort hotel with Taylor as his German mistress. Ustinov is great as he does his usual scene-stealing in his role as a South American ambassador married to Taylor. Excellent cast was somewhat held back by sluggish direction and an uninspired script. Based on the novel of the same name by Graham Greene. 148m/C VHS . Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Alec Guinness, Peter Ustinov, Paul Ford, Lillian Gish, Raymond St. Jacques, Zakes Mokae; D: Peter Glenville; W: Graham Greene. Natl. Bd. of Review '67: Support. Actor (Ford).
