The Invasion ★½ 2007 (PG-13)

In this “Body Snatchers” for the 21st century, Kidman and friends must fight infection by an alien species that takes hold while people are asleep, leaving zombies with no individual thought and no conflict. The only way to prevent the infection is to stay awake, which leads to sleep-deprived paranoia as they struggle to fight the alien menace. Never manages to settle on a consistent theme or tone, as director Hirschbiegel's original version was extensively reshot and recut by the Wachowski/ McTeigue team. The end result is a movie that doesn't make any sense, switches from moody thriller to absurd high-impact actioner with no warning, and lacks any standout performances to redeem it. The worst of many versions of the classic “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” story. 93m/ C DVD, Blu-ray Disc, HD DVD . US Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Jeremy Northam, Jackson Bond, Jeffrey Wright, Veronica Cartwright, Malin Akerman, John M. Jackson, Josef Sommer, Celia Weston, Jeff Wincott, Alexis Raben, Roger Rees; D: Oliver Hirschbiegel; W: David Kajganich; C: Rainer Klausmann; M: John Ottman.
