Arkas, Nikolai (Nikolaievich)
Arkas, Nikolai (Nikolaievich), Ukrainian composer and writer on music; b. Nikolayev, Jan. 7, 1853; d. there, March 26, 1909. He was active as a collector and compiler of Ukrainian, !folk songs. His opera Katerina (1891; Moscow, Feb. 12, 1899) was one of the earliest Ukrainian works in the genre.
