Bernet, Dietfried
Bernet, Dietfried, Austrian conductor; b. Vienna, May 14, 1940. He studied at the Vienna Academy of Music and received training in conducting from Swarowsky and Mitropoulos. In 1962 he won first prize in the Liverpool conducting competition, and then was a conductor in Vienna at the State Opera and at the Volksoper from 1964. In 1973 he made his U.S. debut as a guest conductor with the Chicago Sym. Orch. He also was a guest conductor with various other orchs. on both sides of the Atlantic, and appeared with opera companies in Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, Stuttgart, London, Barcelona, Venice, Glyndebourne, and Geneva. In 1995 he was made chief guest conductor of the Royal Opera in Copenhagen.
