Boyden, David D(odge), American musicologist; b. Westport, Conn., Dec. 10, 1910; d. Berkeley, Sept. 18, 1986. He studied at Harvard Univ. (A.B., 1932; M.A., 1938), then joined the faculty of the Univ. of Calif, at Berkeley, remaining there until 1975. He publ. A Manual of Counterpoint Based on Sixteenth-century Practice (N.Y., 1944; 2nd ed., 1953), The History and Literature of Music, 1750 to the Present (N.Y., 1948), An Introduction to Music (N.Y., 1956; 2nd ed., 1970), and The History of Violin Playing from Its Origins to 1761 (London, 1965).
