Campanari, Giuseppe
Campanari, Giuseppe, Italian baritone, brother of Leandro Campanari; b. Venice, Nov. 17, 1855; d. Milan, May 31, 1927. He was a cellist in the orch. of Milan’s La Scala, but also studied voice. After playing cello in the Boston Sym. Orch. (1884–93), he made his operatic debut as Tonio with Hinrich’s Opera Co. in N.Y. on June 15, 1893. On Nov. 30, 1894, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Di Luna, and continued on its roster until 1912. In addition to Italian roles, he also appeared there as Papageno, Valentin, Nélusko, Escamillo, Kothner, and Nevers.
