Chevillard, (Paul Alexandre) Camille

Chevillard, (Paul Alexandre) Camille, French conductor and composer, son of Pierre (Alexandre François) Chevillard; b. Paris, Oct. 14, 1859; d. Chatou, Seine-et-Oise, May 30, 1923. He studied piano with Georges Mathias and was chiefly self-taught in composition. In 1897 he became asst. conductor to Lamoureux at the Lamoureux Orch. in Paris, whose daughter he married. In 1899 he succeeded Lamoureux as its conductor. From 1914 he was conductor of the Paris Opéra. He wrote the orch. works Ballade sympho-nique (Paris, Feb. 23, 1890), Le Chêne et le roseau (Paris, March 8, 1891), and Fantaisie symphonique (Paris, Oct. 21, 1894), chamber music, piano pieces, and songs.
