Dempsey, Gregory (b Melbourne, 1931). Australian tenor. Studied as bar., but made début as ten. at National Opera of Victoria, 1954 (Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni). Moved to London 1962, joining SW Opera (later ENO), where his roles incl. Peter Grimes, Mime, David, Tom Rakewell, and Don José. Created Boconnion in Bennett's The Mines of Sulphur, 1965. Sang title-role in f. London p. of The Excursions of Mr Brouček (ENO 1978). Amer. début S. Francisco 1966. Sang Dionysus in f. Brit. stage p. of The Bassarids, 1974. CG début 1972. Member of Australian Opera.
