Dyer-Bennet, Richard
Dyer-Bennet, Richard, English-born American singer; b. Leicester, Oct. 6,1913; d. Monterey, Mass., Dec. 14,1991. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1925 and became a naturalized citizen in 1935. He studied voice with Cornelius Reid and guitar with Jose Rey De La Torre. He made his concert debut in N.Y. in 1944; also sang in nightclubs. In 1970 he joined the State Univ. of N.Y. at Stony Brook as an instructor in the theater arts dept. He acquired popularity mainly as a singer of English and American ballads, but he was also praised for his performance of Schubert song cycles, especially Die schone Mullerin in his own tr., under the title ’The Lovely Milleress.”
