Gunzenhauser, Stephen (Charles)

Gunzenhauser, Stephen (Charles), American conductor; b. N.Y., April 8, 1942. He studied at the Oberlin (Ohio) Coll. Cons, of Music (B.Mus., 1963) and at the Salzburg Mozarteum (diploma, 1962); following further training at the New England Cons, of Music in Boston (M.Mus., 1965), he held 3 Fulbright grants and completed his education at the Cologne Hochschule für Musik (artist diploma, 1968). In 1967 he took 1st prize in the Santiago, Spain, conducting competition, and then was an asst. conductor to Markevitch and 1’Orchestre National de 1’Opera de Monte Carlo (1968-69) and to Stokowski and the American Sym. Orch. in N.Y. (1969-70). He was music director of the Brooklyn Center Chamber Orch. (1970-72); then was artistic (1974-82) and administrative (1982-87) director of the Wilmington (Del.) Music School. In 1978 he became music director of the Del. Sym. Orch. in Wilmington; concurrently, was principal conductor (1978-81) and music director (from 1981) of the Lancaster (Pa.) Sym. Orch.
