A New Dictionary of Music (1958, rev. 1967, 1973, and as New Penguin Dictionary of Music, 1978); Choral Music symposium 1963; Pan Book of Opera (with S. Sadie, 1966, rev. 1984); Penguin Dictionary of Musical Performers, 1990. Wrote A Short History of Western Music (1972), Arthur Sullivan, a Victorian Musician (1984, 2nd edn. 1992), biography of Sir Henry Wood (1994), and contrib. to many other books and publications. Librettist of Maw's One-Man Show (1964) and trans. over 20 opera libs. Lect. in mus. history, etc., at RAM 1964–79. Head of mus. dept., Huddersfield Polytechnic, 1979–85 (prof. from 1984).
