Kresânek, Jozef

Kresânek, Jozef, Slovak musicologist and composer; b. ČiČmany, Dec. 20, 1913; d. Bratislava, March 14, 1986. He studied composition with Karel at the Prague Cons. (1932–37) and with Novăk at the Master School there (1937–39). He taught in Prešov, and in 1944 was appointed a lecturer at the Univ. of Bratislava, becoming a full prof, of musical science in 1963. As a music scholar, he dedicated himself mainly to the stylistic analysis and codification of Slovak folk songs, and publ. numerous treatises on the subject. He also publ. a monograph on Eugen Suchon (Bratislava, 1961), as well as other musical studies. His compositions include a String Quartet (1935), Piano Trio (1939), 2 suites for Violin and Piano (1947, 1951), 2 suites for Orch. (1951, rev. 1961; 1953), Prelude and Toccata for Orch. (1957), and a Piano Quintet (1975).
