Lalo, Charles

Lalo, Charles, French aesthetician; b. Périgueux, Feb. 24, 1877; d. Paris, April 1, 1953. He studied aesthetics and philosophy in Bayonne, and then at the Univ. of Paris (Ph.D., 1908, with 2 dissertations: Esquisse d’une esthétique musicale scientifique; publ. in Paris, 1908; 2nd ed., aug., 1939 as Éléments d’une esthétique; and L’Esthétique expérimentale contemporaine; publ. in Paris, 1908). He lectured at the Univ. of Bordeaux, then taught aesthetics and art history at the Sorbonne in Paris (1933–53); was also president of the Société Française d’Esthétique.
