López Capillas, Francesco

López Capillas, Francesco, distinguished Mexican composer and organist, most likely of Spanish birth; b. probably in Andalusia, c. 1615; d. Mexico City, between Jan. 18 and Feb. 7, 1673. Following ordination into the priesthood, he was made organist and bassoonist at Puebla Cathedral in 1641, where he subsequently served as principal organist in 1647–48. From 1654 to 1668 he was organist and maestro de capilla at the cathedral in Mexico City. After giving up his position as organist, he continued in his capacity as maestro de capilla until his death. Among his notable works were masses, Magnificats, motets, hymns, and a Passio Domini sec Matthauem.
