Lourié, Arthur (Vincent) (b St Petersburg, 1892; d Princeton, NJ, 1966). Russ.-born composer (Amer. cit. 1947). Settled in Paris 1923–40, then he moved to USA 1941. Friend of Stravinsky. Experimented with atonality and quarter-tones, but later adopted modal style. Works incl. 2 operas, 2 syms., several large-scale religious works, 3 str. qts. Wrote biography of Koussevitzky (Eng. edn. 1931).
