Maddalena, James (b Lynn, Mass., 1954). American baritone. Début 1974 with Boston Pops Orch. Began assoc. with the producer Peter Sellars 1981, singing in Mozart, Haydn, and Handel operas. Created Nixon in Adams's Nixon in China, Houston 1987, the Captain in Adams's The Death of Klinghoffer, Brussels 1991, and Merlin in Tippett's New Year, Houston 1989. Glyndebourne début 1990.
