Meneses, António
Meneses, António, talented Brazilian cellist; b. Recife, Aug. 23, 1957. His father was 1st hornist in the opera orch. in Rio de Janeiro. Antonio began his musical training when he was 8, then became a pupil of Janigro in Düsseldorf and Stuttgart at 16. He won 2nd prize in the Barcelona International Maria Casals Competition (1976) and in the Rio de Janeiro International Competition (1976); after winning 1st prize in the International ARD Competition in Munich (1977), he captured the prestigious gold medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1982). He subsequently appeared as soloist with many major European orchs. He made his first tour of North America in 1985. His wife is Cecile Licad.
