Miguez, Leopoldo (Américo)

Miguez, Leopoldo (Américo), Brazilian conductor and composer; b. Rio de Janeiro, Sept. 9, 1850; d. there, July 6, 1902. He studied with Nicolau Ribas in Oporto, Portugal, then was active with a publishing firm and as a conductor in Rio de Janeiro, where he championed the cause of Wagner. He was director of the Instituto Nacional de Música there (1890–1902). He pursued Wagnerian ideas in his theater works, which included the operas Pele amor! (Rio de Janeiro, 1897) and Os Saldunes (Rio de Janeiro, Sept. 20, 1901). Other works include a Sym. (1882), overtures, symphonic poems, marches, songs, and piano pieces.
